“The bass, no matter what kind of music you’re playing, it just enhances the sound and makes everything sound more beautiful and full. When the bass stops, the bottom kind of drops out of everything.”

– Charlie Haden

Since the 1960s, the bass guitar has largely replaced the double bass in popular music as the bass instrument in the rhythm section. The bassist anchors the harmonic framework and establishing the rhythm. Many styles of music utilise the bass guitar, including rock, metal, pop, punk rock, country, reggae, gospel, blues, and jazz and types of bass lines vary widely from one style of music to another. In jazz, fusion, Latin, funk, and in some rock and metal styles, the bass players can often be heard soloing or improvising.
